Derek, I'm responding as no-one else has, altho as I've only had a 29 for 2 years I'm not that qualified to answer your question in detail!
In the last year, at least 'Sailing Today' and 'Yachting Monthly' have both reviewed the 29, and as far as I recall, both included some tips about what to look out for, so might be worth you getting hold of these. The twin-skin is allegedly something that would make hull repairs more costly because of the access inside, but I've no experience nor heard of any. If you are buying an older boat then I would certainly spend the money on a hull survey if not a full survey. On the other hand, no boat I've ever heard of fell apart thro osmosis!
As to the engine, well, it depends, doesn't it. Has it been decently maintained, how many hours has it done etc etc. Appearance can be good intial guide - if it's clean-looking, no obvious water or oil leaks etc, starts easily, no blue smoke, then there's a good chance it's not in bad nick. I guess the best thing would be to find a boat where someone recently fitted a new one!
We love our 29, built like a proverbial outhouse but sails beautifully.
Good luck!
Dick.
