My Bukh 20 is fine, even with a folding prop. I do however prefer to motorsail at about 20 degrees off the wind when punching into a head sea: this damps the motion and effectively lengthens the waves.
There comes a point when you have to slow down to avoid slamming down into the holes in the sea. I've always found this the limiting factor on progress rather than engine power.
