We were able to benefit (slightly!) from our unfortunate flooding experience by realising just how much effort is required to pump out a boat a foot deep in water. I think it is vital to be able to operate the pump in a comfortable standing position, using all the muscles available.

At the time I had the pump mounted on a board which I was forced to use on the sole with my foot holding it down. This was very uncomfortable and tiring. Although I felt reluctant to drill mounting holes in the companionway steps, I concluded that this was virtually the only place in the boat that satisfied the requirements. I would avoid a location that requires operation in a kneeling position, firstly because the legs provide much of the power, and secondly because your head might be under water when using it!
